It’s safe to say ChatGPT is the most popular generative AI tool out there. It has completely revolutionized the way we use the internet. All you have to do is to type a prompt, and you’ll get a good answer. The only limit to this tool is your imagination.

Personally, I’ve seen the pros and cons of having such a powerful tool available to the public. On one hand, its efficiency has, unfortunately, displaced certain opportunities for some individuals. On the other hand, the benefits are too numerous to count. From boosting productivity to simplifying tasks we once thought required expert skills.

So, what exactly is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI. Think of it as a robot trained on a gigantic library of books, articles, websites, conversations, and code. It reads, understands, and responds to natural human language.

ChatGPT was officially launched by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, and within 5 days, it garnered over 1 million users.

You can ask anything, and it will provide a good answer for you using its resources. Want a business plan? It can help. Need to write a proposal, email, or TikTok caption? Done. Want to brainstorm a name for your fashion brand? Easy. Stuck on how to explain Bitcoin to your little nephew? ChatGPT can break it down like you’re five.

Why ChatGPT Matters for Africans

In a continent where access to expert advice, quality education, or efficient tools can be limited by infrastructure, cost, or geography, ChatGPT is a game-changer. Here’s how:

Low-Cost Support: Instead of paying for a consultant or taking days to research, you can ask ChatGPT and get a draft or solution in seconds.

Personalized Teacher: Whether you’re a student, entrepreneur, designer, or writer, ChatGPT can coach you, give you ideas, and help you level up. It’s a safe space to ask questions you might hesitate to pose to a human teacher.

Virtual Assistant: One-man businesses are becoming more common because of ChatGPT. The latest innovation, “Agent mode,” can perform basic tasks humans used to do. Small business owners and freelancers use the tool to design images, draft proposals, build websites, craft marketing content, repurpose content, and streamline admin tasks.

ChatGPT isn’t a perfect tool yet, but it’s currently leading the competition against Claude, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, DeepSeek, Meta AI, and more.

The truth is, most people will never be able to use this tool to its highest potential because they treat it like a personalized Google Search. Users must be familiar with using context-aware prompting.

What I do is create a persona for each chat so the AI tool acts as an expert in the field I’m asking for assistance on. Also, samples can be provided for additional context. Like I said in the beginning of this article, the only limitation is your imagination.
